‘Last year I got to talk to John Haywood of Appalachiatari here at Orbit’s for the Whizzbang podcast, and it’s been one of the best conversations I’ve ever had. We talked a lot about the intersection of Appalachia and heavy metal, how growing up as a metalhead around these parts often put you at odds with the church folks. How it’s weird to be an outsider within what’s already an outsider culture.

Appalachiatari tackles that concept head-on with Blood On The Altar. A fire and brimstone blend of scuzzy, fuzzy, southern-fried grooves and riffs galore, paired up with some righteous fiddle, harmonica, organ and accordion. It’s got a good high stank, like granny cooking up a pot of ramps, it’ll make your damn eyes water. ‘
